WhatsApp introduced its dark mode feature to beta versions of its Android and iPhone apps in early 2020. Although the stable versions have not yet received the dark mode update, WABetaInfo, a tracker for WhatsApp beta features, reports that WhatsApp is actively developing dark mode for its desktop application and WhatsApp Web. Screenshots of the dark interface on the desktop app have been shared by the tracker, indicating that while the feature promises a more eye-friendly experience, it is still a work in progress.
According to a post by WABetaInfo, the dark mode for desktop and Web is currently in the early stages of development and is not yet available to the public. There is no specified release date either. Given that discussions about WhatsApp’s dark mode began as early as 2018, it may take some time for the company to implement it fully on WhatsApp Web and desktop. The beta features tracker has noted that several adjustments are still needed, and currently, there is no option to enable or disable the dark mode.
To recap, the dark mode for WhatsApp mobile apps was initially introduced with Android beta version 2.20.13 in January, followed by iOS beta version 2.20.30.13 for iPhone users earlier this month.
The exact timeline for when stable WhatsApp applications will receive the dark mode remains unknown. For the mobile app, the native dark mode is simply referred to as “Dark” in the theme selection interface. It transforms the messaging app’s entire user interface into a dark green color scheme with some contrasting elements. The company has been gradually expanding the availability of dark mode to users of the iPhone beta app.
WhatsApp made headlines last week when it was discovered that Google was indexing its group chat invite links. Subsequently, WhatsApp took steps to address this issue and prevent results from appearing in searches.
