Google Cloud Platform is assembling a dedicated Web 3 team to capitalize on the potential of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. The suite of cloud computing services has announced that the new Web 3 team will concentrate on developing services tailored for developers engaged in blockchain applications. Moreover, the team will extend blockchain services to enterprises and customers seeking to harness the capabilities of this technology. The recently formed Google Cloud Web 3 division, led by former Citigroup executive James Tromans, has already outlined a comprehensive roadmap. This roadmap includes enhanced management of blockchain nodes and the creation of software for exploring blockchain data within third-party applications.
Amit Zavery, Vice President at Google Cloud, shared insights on the company’s Web 3 group, stating in a company email (via CNBC), “While the world is still in the early stages of embracing Web 3, it is a market that is already showing tremendous potential, with many customers urging us to enhance our support for Web 3 and crypto-related technologies.” Zavery emphasized the goal of making the Google Cloud Platform the preferred choice for developers and reiterated this stance in a media session, underscoring the new group’s pivotal role in advancing crypto technologies.
The services provided by the Web 3 group will be akin to those already offered by major tech players such as Alibaba and Amazon. Notably, Microsoft had previously offered blockchain services until last year when it discontinued its Azure blockchain services. Presently, Google Cloud is positioned to compete with Alibaba and Amazon for market dominance in cloud infrastructure services.
In January, Google Cloud unveiled plans for a Digital Assets Team in response to the surging popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), exploring crypto payment options at the time. Google has collaborated with various blockchain-focused companies, including Chainlink, Ontology, EOS, Theta Network, and Hedera Hashgraph. Additionally, the tech giant has engaged in a blockchain project with Dapper Labs’ Flow blockchain.
