Google appears to be preparing to introduce a feature that will allow Chrome browser users to create their own personalized themes. While Google Chrome is well-known for its browsing capabilities, it is also recognized for its flexibility in offering customization options to users. Currently, Chrome users can enhance their browser’s appearance by downloading color-based theme add-ons from the Chrome Web Store. However, if they wish to take customization further and select their own colors, the only option available is to create a custom theme extension. This may soon change with a new development.
As reported by 9to5Google, recent commits to the Chromium Gerrit suggest that Google is working on making it easier for Chrome users to customize the browser to suit their individual preferences. While the Chrome Web Store already provides traditional themes with customization options, the most popular ones primarily allow users to adjust the browser’s color scheme. To simplify the customization process, Google has started implementing built-in color-based themes, accessible through specific flags, to offer users a more personalized Chrome browsing experience.
According to the code changes in the Chromium Gerrit forum, Google will introduce a built-in color theme generator that caters to users who prefer to customize their browsers according to their personal tastes. Users will have the option to enable this feature from Chrome://flags, with three flags related to Chrome Colors. In practice, this will allow users to set a custom theme, personalize the Google logo, and customize the toolbar—all in their preferred light or dark shade of a color.
According to information from the Chromium bug tracker, the ability to create custom color-based themes is expected to be available in the Color and theme section of the Customize menu in Chrome 77, which will be the next version of Chrome.
